What Is Scientific Notation

Using our calculator you may get different numbers on the calculator display. If your number is too big or too small it can't be shown on the display because there is no enough place on it. In this case your number will be written in the special form called "scientific notation".

where ■ is any real number; ▲ is any integer

Example nr. 1:

578 * 10^-5 = 0.00578

578e-5 = 0.00578

578E-5 = 0.00578

Example nr. 2:

0.34 * 10⁸ = 0.34e+8 = 0.34e8 = 0.34E8 = 34000000

So, it doesn't matter what form you will get:

■*10^▴ or ■e▲ or ■E▲

because

■*10^▴ = ■e▲ = ■E▲

Example nr. 1:

0.001 * 10^-23 = 0,001e-23 = 0,001E-23

Example nr. 2:

2.7 * 10²⁵ = 2.7e+25 = 2.7e25 = 2.7E25

In this case you have numbers in the scientific notation form.

So, you see that this form is only the need connected with the display's possibility.
